Abstract

The Lombok-Sumbawa Islands region is experiencing significant motorization acceleration phenomena in the era of Industrial Revolution 4.0 and Society 5.0, however, this is not balanced with adequate transportation infrastructure development. Transportation studies in island regions remain relatively limited, particularly those comprehensively analyzing disparities between motor vehicle growth and infrastructure capacity. This study addresses the questions: how is the pattern of motorization acceleration in the Lombok-Sumbawa Islands region during 2015-2023 and what are the main land transportation infrastructure challenges faced? The objective is to analyze motorization acceleration within the context of transportation infrastructure challenges and formulate strategic recommendations for sustainable transportation development that accommodates the geographical and economic characteristics of the islands. The research method employs a quantitative descriptive-analytical approach with Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) analysis on time-series data of motor vehicles and transportation infrastructure for the period 2015-2024 from the Central Statistics Agency. Results show motor vehicle growth reached CAGR 5.70% with motorcycle dominance at 90.34%, contrasting sharply with road length decrease of 1,008.56 kilometers (CAGR -1.38%). Critical findings reveal disparities, where an average addition of 97,740 vehicles per year must utilize a road network that decreases by 126.07 kilometers annually. Spatial heterogeneity shows road length in North Lombok Regency grew 8.45%, while in East Lombok Regency it decreased drastically by -10.06%. The conclusions indicate a fundamental imbalance between motorization and infrastructure that threatens regional transportation sustainability. Recommendations include developing an Islands Transportation Master Plan, implementing Bus Rapid Transit, and establishing a Regional Transportation Authority for sustainable multilevel governance coordination.
