The Paradox of Increasing Rice Production Amidst Declining Harvest Areas Between NTB Regions 2018-2023

Food security has become a strategic issue in national and regional economic development, particularly in agriculture-based regions such as West Nusa Tenggara Province (NTB). The main problem faced is the occurrence of a paradoxical phenomenon in the form of increased rice production amid declining harvest areas. The research gap identified is the absence of a comprehensive analysis of inter-regional variations in rice production in NTB and its relation to agribusiness transformation during 2018-2023. This study aims to analyze the dynamics of inter-regional rice productivity in NTB Province and formulate sustainable rice agribusiness development strategies based on regional characteristics. Using a quantitative approach with descriptive analytical methods, this study analyzes secondary data from NTB Statistics Office using Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) and quantitative descriptive analysis. The results show a marginal decrease in harvest area by -0.120% in aggregate, but production increased by 1.049%. Significant regional variations were observed with West Sumbawa Regency recording the highest production growth (4.674%) and West Lombok Regency showing the highest growth in harvest area (3.404%). Productivity improvements are associated with the adoption of more efficient agricultural technology, agricultural intensification, and strengthening farmer institutional capacity. This study recommends developing a productivity roadmap based on regional characteristics, strengthening value chain linkages, accelerating appropriate technology adoption, and developing integrated agricultural business models that consider aspects of productivity, profitability, and environmental sustainability.
